I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Villa Machakhela●ვილა მაჭახელა, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a place with both English and Georgian script on the sign. But you know what? This four-star spot right on Batumi Pier turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you actually excited to tell people about it.

The location is pretty much perfect if you want to be in the thick of things in Batumi. I mean, you’re literally steps from the pier, so you can hear the Black Sea lapping against the dock – which is either soothing or slightly annoying depending on how much you’ve had to drink at the nearby bars (there are quite a few within stumbling distance). The whole Batumi Boulevard stretches out right in front of you, and honestly, I found myself just wandering out for evening walks without even planning to. You’ve got the Alphabet Tower doing its light show thing, the Ali and Nino statue doing their eternal dance, and all those quirky cafes that Batumi does so well. The staff actually gave me decent recommendations for places locals eat – not just the tourist traps with English menus.

What really got me about this place was how they’ve managed to keep that Georgian character while still feeling polished enough for international travelers. The rooms have this sort of understated elegance – nothing flashy, but everything works properly (you’d be surprised how rare that can be in some parts of Georgia). The Wi-Fi actually functioned reliably, which let me video call home without those awkward frozen-face moments. Parking was straightforward too, though I’d recommend asking about it when you book because Batumi’s old town streets can be… well, let’s call them “creative” in their layout. The breakfast spread leaned heavily Georgian – lots of fresh bread, local cheeses, and they make a mean khachapuri if you ask nicely. I actually ended up skipping lunch most days because I’d stuff myself silly in the morning.

The service felt genuinely warm rather than just professionally polite, if that makes sense. When I mentioned I was trying to figure out transport to Gonio Fortress, the front desk guy spent ten minutes drawing me a little map and explaining which marshrutka to catch. During my stay in late September, things were pretty quiet – most of the summer crowds had cleared out, but the weather was still perfect for walking around. I imagine it gets considerably busier during peak season, but the pier location means you’re always going to have that sea breeze keeping things relatively comfortable even when it’s packed.

  Villa Machakhela is absolutely beautiful! The views from the villa, the hot tub on the private outdoor area, it’s an incredible place to stay. If you’re looking for somewhere to escape city life and be surrounded by nature, this is the place to book. We only stayed one night, as it was our last stop before heading home, but I wish we’d have been able to stay here for longer. It was my favourite part of my trip to Georgia!

  Just magical. There are literally no other words for this place. Waking up to the snowy mountains, eating Zehras khachapouri and taking a stroll to the persimmons tree just a street down – just wonderful. We had the most relaxing, peaceful time at Ushangi‘s place and appreciate their hospitality and kindness throughout the travel. Yes, it is up a beautiful mountain so don’t forget to bring snacks and some food but they also produce the most delicious food in-house and it’s worth every Lari. I will absolutely visit this magical place again, and again and again!
