Old batumi Overview

You know what struck me first about Old Batumi? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street – Zubalashvili – where you can actually hear yourself think, which honestly is pretty rare in the tourist zones. I mean, you’re still close enough to everything that matters, but there’s something refreshing about stepping off the main drag into this more authentic slice of Batumi.

The building itself has this lived-in character that I actually prefer over those sterile new places. Sure, it’s a three-star property, but don’t let that fool you – the 9.8 rating isn’t some fluke. The rooms have these high ceilings that make everything feel more spacious than you’d expect, and the windows open wide (thank god, because sometimes you just want that Black Sea breeze flowing through). What really got me was the attention to small things – like actually having enough outlets near the bed and water pressure that doesn’t make you question your life choices. The owner, who’s usually around during check-in, knows the city inside and out and will steer you toward the good khachapuri spots that aren’t crawling with tour groups.

Location-wise, you’re maybe a seven-minute walk from the boulevard and the beach, but here’s the thing – you’re also right in this neighborhood where locals actually live and work. There’s this little bakery two blocks over that opens at 6 AM and makes these incredible khachapuri that are still warm when you grab them for breakfast. The street itself is pretty quiet at night, which was perfect for me since I’m one of those light sleepers who gets cranky with constant traffic noise. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving (most spots on the street fill up by evening), but honestly, once you’re settled here, you’ll probably end up walking everywhere anyway. The whole Old Town area is really walkable, and you’ll find yourself discovering these little wine bars and family-run restaurants that don’t even have English menus – which, trust me, is where you want to eat. I stayed here during late September when the summer crowds were thinning out, and it felt like I had found this perfect balance of being connected to the city but not overwhelmed by it.
